I am conflicted about the term “anti-aging”.  Sure, I have lots of serums, creams and religiously use a prescription retinol.  And I’ve spent a lot of money on these lotions and potions.  So, technically I am trying to slow the visual signs of aging, or, I suppose “anti-age”.  But I feel more aligned with the phrase “aging gracefully”.  And, in that spirit, I want to share with you one device that has made a difference. I am attempting to age gracefully with the help of NuFace.

But First, Let’s Get Real

I did have surgery on my hooded eyes (also runs in the family) about 15 years ago. And, I have occasionally used Botox. Mostly in the area of the 11’s because it does give a bit of a lift to the eyebrow area.

So, I’m not anti-intervention. But my current mindset is that I’m tying to appreciate the positives and gently mitigate the less-than-positive.

In researching this device, I had to focus on what area I wanted to address.

I Don’t Hate My Wrinkles

I have spent countless hours at the beach, by the pool, floating on the lake and on the pontoon boat. It’s true, I love sun and I accept that I’ve earned these wrinkles.  And, in true WETSU spirit, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it!

Since my mid-20’s I’ve been pretty good about sunscreen.  Before that, one of my earliest memories is of my Mom mixing baby oil with iodine and us “laying out” in the back yard with aluminum foil by our side to “attract the sun”.  So, some real damage has been done – and I take responsibility for that.

I’m okay with the lines around my eyes.  The ones that get deeper when I smile.  I have made peace with them and don’t feel the need to do anything drastic to eliminate those wrinkles.

I Do Hate What Gravity has Done

Some days I look in the mirror and it looks like one of those grand castles who’s foundation is now crumbling.  It’s seen better days. I can’t deny it—my cheeks have fallen.  Jowels are hereditary in my family and thus, inevitable.  And, yes, I have them.  Gravity is inescapable.

These are the things I don’t like.  And these are the things I’d like to help – if only temporarily. Lifting and firming — that’s what I’m looking for.

Enter Microcurrent Devices

I had seen microcurrent devices on Instagram and in magazines.  Watching women roll the device over their face a couple times and say, “look at this lift!” That, of course, pulled me in.

First, I did a little research and found out that celebrities and estheticians have been using microcurrent for a long time.  In fact, before an event like the Academy Awards or Grammy’s celebrity facialists generally do microcurrent treatments on their clients to look extra lifted and refreshed.

What Does Microcurrent Do?

Microcurrent is a form of stimulation that sends waves of low level energy down, through the skin, into the facial muscles.  It is shown to increase ATP, Adenosine Triphosphate, which provides the energy necessary for many processes in cells.  You can read more about that here.

It does not produce collagen, which would be a more long-term benefit.  But alas, it does sculpt and tone facial muscles, temporarily providing greater contour and some lifting and tightening.  It is not a long-term lifting solution.  But you can see results immediately, and possibly cumulatively, with regular use.

I Purchased the NuFace Trinity Classic.

The one I saw the most was NuFace – and that’s the one I purchased.  I have the “Trinity”, which accommodates attachments for the lip and eye area and one for red light.  I don’t have the attachments.  The Trinity is an “FDA Cleared” device that is considered a temporary treatment for lifting and tightening.

Because it’s sending electrical current into your skin you have to use a conducting gel.  I ran out of the NuFace gel once and tried aloe vera gel as a replacement. The NuFace gel seems to stay moist as you’re using the device. The aloe vera gel dried too quickly on my skin and I got a slight zapping feeling. Which, while not too uncomfortable, proved that the microcurrent was working.

How To Use NuFace

Because it provides a temporary lift, you’ll get the most benefit from using it in the morning vs. at night.  I watched a couple videos and it’s fairly intuitive that you want to move the device in upward motions to lift the muscles.  There is a 5-second beep that goes off letting you know to move the device.  I usually do 3-4 passes before moving on to another area.

The one area they say to avoid is the front of the neck where the thyroid is.  You can use it on the sides of the neck.

It works!

I am here to tell you it does work. Honestly, for me it’s a subtle difference (so I won’t be showing any before/after photos).  On the days I use it, which is most, I see and feel a difference.

My face immediately feels a little tingly and tighter.  And if I catch a glance of myself in a mirror, I do notice that my face looks a bit smoother and tightened.  It’s not dramatic, but every little bit helps.  So, I’ll take it.

In fact, after using it for a few months I even bought the “NuBody”.  This was an impulse purchase because I have only used it once or twice.  But, the NuFace Trinity has been a great investment and I use it just about every day.

If you’ve considered one of these devices and are on the fence, I would say it is a worthwhile investment in aging gracefully.  You can get it at Nordstrom, directly from the NuFace website or on Amazon here.
